It was the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s annual Give Kids a Smile Day at University of the Pacific in San Francisco. The petting zoo, along with other fun activities, were all part of an effort to help hesitant children overcome the fear of going to the dentist. Give Kids a Smile Day is a free community clinic where faculty and student dentists provided oral screening and teeth cleaning to more than 100 Bay Area kids. Students from the doctor of physical therapy (DPT), doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) and speech-language pathology programs participated in an interdisciplinary simulation with high fidelity mannequins at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on the University of Pacific campus in Stockton.

University of the Pacific student athletes and coaches hosted more than 150 Stockton-area girls for clinics in various sports to celebrate the 32nd annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The annual event has empowered women and girls to embrace physical activity and build their courage, confidence, and character through participation in sports.

Pacific faculty members Balint Sztarary and Liang Xue presented the 7th Annual Faraday Christmas Lecture at University of the Pacific in Stockton. The annual Faraday Lecture featured the chemistry professors dressed as 19th century chemists, carrying out experiments that delighted audiences of all ages. The tradition comes from the Royal Institution of Great Britain’s Christmas Lecture, which has offered a science lecture to children in the London community since 1825. The famous scientist Michael Faraday presented more of these lectures than any of his contemporaries, and the series was eventually named after him. The annual lecture pays homage to Faraday while also entertaining Stockton youth, and teaching them about chemistry.

Faculty, family and friends gathered in support of the inaugural cohort of Physician Assistant (PA) students at University of the Pacific in Sacramento, celebrating their White Coat ceremony. A group of 30 students from University of Pacific took a break from their studies and spent the morning volunteering at the Stockton Emergency Food Bank, sorting thousands of pounds of donated food and packing it into Thanksgiving food boxes for families in need. The student volunteers represented a variety of campus groups at University of the Pacific; today’s volunteer event was organized by the university’s inter-faith Religious and Spiritual Life Center.

Service learning is a big component of the experience at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences because it helps the community and benefits students. This week a group of over 30 students and faculty from the occupational therapy program in St. Augustine spent the day at Arc of Putnam County in Florida, providing much-needed services to the clients of the nonprofit organization, which serves those with severe disabilities.

University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences hosted the 3rd annual Ninja Survival Challenge event in St. Augustine, Florida, utilizing the obstacle course on campus. Some 50 people from across the state participated in the event, including PT students, which raised money for the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA).

On August 29, 1966 a time capsule was buried at Dana Point and 50 years later, to the day, leaders opened the time capsule and shared the contents with the public. The contents will be on display at Dana Point City Hall courtesy of the Dana Point Historical Society.
